A stay at Khanfous Retreat is all about relaxing, disconnecting from the modern world, exploring nature and reconnecting with the simple life. It is surrounded by beautiful countryside, has views to the Atlantic Ocean and is just a short trek (40 minutes) form two of the most stunning, and relatively unknown beaches. Within the village of Bni Meslem, there is little to do apart from watch village life go by. 

For the more adventurous, there are plenty of local markets, ancient ruins and historical towns and cities nearby, which are all well worth visiting.

Beaches

Khanfous Retreat overlooks the Atlantic Ocean. It takes just 40 minutes to walk through the fields, along the donkey tracks, to get to two of the most secluded and tranquil beaches in the area.

Sidi Mugait Beach (also known as Hermes’ beach) is a long beach lined with chiringuitos (beach cafés) which are open in July and August. Here you can find plenty of sun loungers, parasols and places to get fresh food and drinks. 

Rada Beach is the same distance, but located just to the south of Sidi Mugait beach. This vast, open beach rarely has many people around, as it’s one of the least well known in the area. There is just one cafe, Chez Mounir, which serves fresh fish and salads.

Our team will be more than happy to show you the way and can even organise donkeys to take little ones.

Markets

There are two weekly markets in the local area.

The first is the Thursday market. This is held on the road between Asilah and Khanfous Retreat. The market has a combination of fresh produce, second hand goods and furniture. (Map)

The Monday market is held at Sidi El Yamani, which is 15 km away. This is the larger market and draws villagers from the surrounding area. It’s also a livestock market. As it’s close to Mzoura, it’s a good idea to combine the two. (Map)

Ancient Ruins

Nearby the Monday market at Sidi El Yamani, is Mzoura, a stone circle believed to be constructed in 3000 BC. (Map)

Lixus is also just 30 minutes away, on the road to Larache. It was an ancient city, founded in 1200 BC, and home to the Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans and Arabs. (Map)

From there you can easily reach Larache, which has an interesting harbour and fish market.

Towns & Cities

As well as Larache,  the beautiful coastal town of Asilah is just 20 minutes away. Get lost in it’s charming medina, head down to the port, or visit one of the many cafés and restaurants.

Tangier is also a fascinating city to visit and it takes less than an hour to get there. Here you can explore the bazaars grand socco, walk up to the kasabah or view the ships going in and out of the international port.

Getting Around

If you’ve got a car, accessing all of the locations mentioned is easy and they’re all marked on Google Maps.

If you don’t have a car, it’s a 20 – 30 minute walk (with a few big hills) to the main road. From there you can flag down any of the shared taxis that run the route from Mejlaw to Asilah. We can also arrange taxis for you if you need, but we’ll need to know in advance.
